LibraryOne of the greatest influences upon a child's intellectual, social, and of course, spiritual development lies in his ability to embrace reading—not just as a necessary tool, but as an essential means of garnering information and enjoyment. As such, the child needs to be encouraged to read “much and wide” at his level of reading development and to be read to at his level of intellectual and spiritual maturity—and he needs a scheduled time for both, away from distractions, as well as a time for discussing with others his impressions. The development of Adelphi's library supports these needs. Our core collection has been selected from both classic and contemporary authors--Christian and non-Christian--with fiction and non-fiction well-represented. In this selection, the workers have made every effort to ensure moral and academic quality. This collection continues to be enlarged through screened donations of volumes and through fundraising: for example, our successful Barnes and Noble book fair this past spring added several selections to our art books, and through our fall book fair with Sarah Phillips of The Book Spot, we have new additions to our “middler” fiction section. Through the efforts of Susan Lowery and her daughter Toni at the Seattle Book Sale, we were able to put over 300 volumes into the picture book, “middler”, and young adult sections. We also have regular access to the Billings Parmley bookmobile as well as their main library and have made use of the two academic libraries housed on the campuses of our local colleges. We look forward to meeting you and filling your book needs! |
